How To Buy A Freebord

So you want to get in on Freebording and learn to carve the asphalt like it's fresh powder but don't know where (or how) to get started. That's okay-we're here to help.

Wakeboard Binding

One of the best things about the sport is that the equipment is so customizable. You can truly make your ride your own by adjusting the trucks, wheels, Freebord composition, grip tape, bindings-just about everything about the Freebord. And that's exactly what makes it a little hard to get into at first.

Wakeboard Binding

There are a number of things you should consider when buying your first Freebord.

Freebord Composition

The majority of Freebords are manufactured from Maple plywood. It's rugged, will last through some hard thrashing, and sturdy. However, it is a bit on the heavy side and is not as stiff or responsive as it could be. If you want a lighter, more responsive Freebord, you might consider a bamboo Freebord.

Bamboo Freebords are relatively new to the market. They have 3 ply Maple cores with two plies of bamboo on the outsides. They offer rigid construction that's much lighter and more maneuverable than standard plywood Freebords. They'll also last a lot longer-bamboo is the strongest natural material on earth relative to its weight. In other words, they're great for grinding and aerial tricks.

Size of the Freebord

Freebords come in a variety of sizes ranging from 75 to 85 cm. If you want a Freebord that's really responsive (maybe even a bit twitchy) smaller is better. Larger Freebords tend to be more stable and provide more foot room. Generally larger riders prefer larger Freebords, smaller riders, smaller Freebords. However, the opposite can be just as true.

In the end, the size of your Freebord should be determined by your riding style, not your body size. We recommend trying a variety of different sizes-if you can-before you buy in order to ensure you're getting something you're comfortable riding on.

Freebord Trucks, Wheels, and Bearings

Just like on a skateboard, the trucks, wheels, and bearings on your Freebord will determine how tight or loose your Freebord is, how fast it will go, and how much grip you'll have on the asphalt.

The design of the Freebord truck has evolved to the third generation. These G3 trucks are the only models you'll be able to find new (who wants to buy used replacement parts?) and feature advanced design and manufacturing spec's that are truly top-tier. Not only are they built wider for more stability and strength, they're designed to hold up to wear and tear. However, keep in mind that these trucks can be tightened or loosened to fit your riding style. The looser they are, the more play in your Freebord and the more control you will have. (It's recommended that beginner Freebord riders keep their trucks tight until they learn the feel of the Freebord.)

While Freebord wheels come in a variety of sizes, it's generally the composition that affects their performance. The basic Freebord wheel is a urethane-blend based wheel and is good for beginners and those who primarily use their Freebords for cruising. They tend to be slower and a bit "sticky" so hill bomber s and serious trick riders often upgrade to Slasher wheels. The Slasher wheels are a made of a custom blended plastic that's designed to give you speed, grip, and durability all in one. These wheels are great for intermediate and advanced riders who want a little more control over their Freebord. In addition, they'll hold up better and resist flat spotting.

Freebord bearings come in two models. The standard set of bearings will give you everything you really need-especially when you're just learning. If you want more speed, however, switch them out for the Bones bearings. Bones bearings are nearly frictionless compared to the standard model and will have you ripping down hills as fast as possible. It should probably go without mentioning that Bones bearings are recommended for advanced riders.

Freebord Kits

Probably the easiest way to buy your first Freebord is to pick up a kit from BlackDiamondSports. Their kits come pre-customized according to your riding style and body size. If you want something that's loose and responsive for the advanced rider you know you can become, something that's tight and stable for the beginner in you, or something in between, these kits give you everything you need in a convenient all-in-one package. Not to mention they shave some serious cash off buying your Freebord piece by piece.

Wakeboard Problems Solved

Are you having wakeboarding related problems spanning from not knowing how to swim to the inability to land certain tricks? Do not worry. You are not alone! Every wakeboarder from beginners to seasoned riders experience problems. Now, for your reading and learning pleasure, I am going to discuss some of the most common problems riders experience and how you can solve such problems. So listen up.

Wakeboard Binding

--Can't Swim: wear a vest

Wakeboard Binding

--When beginning a wakeboarding career, one of the first questions asked is always "what board should I buy?" Here are some of the aspects you should consider when buying a new board.

Many of the factors involved in the board buying process are determined by skill level. In this case, the level is obviously beginner. So what shape is appropriate for a beginner? A beginning rider would prefer to buy a board with squared-off edges because they provide much more stability for the rider.

Another important factor to consider is board size. Board lengths usually range from 120 to 150 centimeters with widths ranging from 38 to 44 centimeters. Beginning riders would benefit the most from a board with a larger surface area. A longer, wider board will provide the rider with more stability for surface riding.

Rocker is less important for beginner riders searching for their first board, but it does have implications for your future riding. A continuous rocker will result in smoother riding while a three-stage rocker will give the rider more pop off the wake. A rocker can also be abrupt or gradual. An abrupt rocker will result in softer landings while a gradual rocker will provide for smoother, faster, and more controlled surface riding.

The fins used should also not be overlooked. Beginning riders should benefit from longer fins because of the stability and direction control they provide. As you get better, switching to smaller fins is encouraged to allow for easier surface orientation switching (surface 180's, butterslides, powerslides, etc.)

Finally, should probably buy some bindings for your new board. The bottom line is that bindings should be snug yet comfortable. Tighter bindings provide a more responsive ride, but bindings that are too tight can result in injuries. Find a good middle ground.

--Getting up on a wakeboard is not hard, but it can be extremely frustrating if you cannot seem to grasp the concept. Most people only have to get up once or twice before they realize the trick to it. Which brings me to the next problem, "Why can't I get up?"

Let's just say you got yourself into the water just fine. Now you are going to want to make sure you are floating on your back with your board facing towards and perpendicular to the boat. The line should be situated on the top of your board directly in the center.

As the boat begins to give tension to the line, overhand grasp the handle with both hands and curl into a ball. Keep your arms straight out in front of you, and tuck your knees as close to your chest as possible without hurting yourself. Make sure the toe edge of your board is above the surface of the water.

When the boat starts to pull you up, lean back against the pull slightly, and begin to progressively move the handle to your lead hip. This is where the most common problem, from what I've witnessed, usually occurs. People start to feel the pull of the boat, and they want to stand up right away. Don't do it! Just don't. You will most likely end up putting too much pressure on the front of the board, and you'll drop your tip. Just remember that the boat is boat. It will do most to all of the work. Once your board is completely on top of the water you can stand up. Keep your knees slightly bent, back straight, most of your weight on your back foot, handle at your front hip, and start doing flips... or maybe work your way up to it.

--Breaking your ankles on the wake? Can't stop casing the wake or landing way in the flats? Washy wake? These problems can usually be solved by two things: configuring your line length and boat speed. Here's the thing; line length is dependent on boat speed, and boat speed is dependent on line length.

In general, Line length tends to get progressively longer as the rider becomes more experienced. However, this is really only because it is easier for less experienced riders to clear the shorter wake gap that accompanies a shorter line. Most wakeboarders ride at a line length between 50 and 80 feet. To get started configuring your boat speed and line length, set up the line so the length falls somewhere in that range. Set the boat speed to roughly 20mph, and ride the trough of the wake to locate where you will ride up on a wake jump.

Next, have the driver increase or decrease the boat speed until the wake curls over just behind your located point of impact. Once you are set up, hit the wake and see how it feels. No good? Lengthen the line, and repeat the process until it feels right. This method can also be reversed if that works better for you. Just find the speed you feel most comfortable riding at, and let the line out until you find that sweet spot on the wake.

--Can't stop spinning off-axis? I've seen it a thousand times... well a hundred... about ten. Anyway, if this is the case there is a good chance it is due to one of the following issues.

First and foremost, you might just be throwing your spins to early. Throwing your spins off the top of the wake or sooner will result in an inappropriately off-axis spin. The best time to begin a spin is at the peak of your wake jump. Once you've reached the top of your jump, pull the handle to the appropriate hip, and begin your ON-axis spin.

Another problem might be your weight distribution coming into the wake. To perform the most on-axis spin you can, be sure to come into the wake centered on the board with your shoulders level.

--Don't have a boat?: hit up a cable park. There are over 140 worldwide.

Hopefully these are the answers to all of your wakeboarding worries. However, there is an extremely off chance that they aren't. Believe it or not, there are more wakeboarding inquiries out there besides ones above. If that just so happens to be the case, contact me on my blog, http://www.wakeboardersworld.blogspot.com, with your problems, and I will do my best to help you out.

Skysurfing - Six Steps To Getting Started

Do you ever feel like there is not enough time in the day for surfing and skydiving? Well, if so your problems may have been resolved. Skysurfing is the pastime you are looking for, jump out of an aeroplane with a small surfboard strapped to your feet and away you go. Pull off your favourite surfing moves without ever getting wet. Sound good? Then you qualify to read on.....

Wakeboard Binding

Step one

Wakeboard Binding

Now, don't just go diving out of a plane with your board strapped on, you need to be an experienced skydiver to take this on. The sport is a form of freestyle skydiving and you must be fit to try it, Learn as much as you can about skysurfing through parachuting and air sports websites and pick up some books about the subject to educate yourself as much as possible.

Step two

You need a skydiving licence and therefore be a jump master. To get this you need to have taken part in competitions, done group freefalls, water jumps and be able to pack your own parachute. So as you can tell you need a bit of experience to do this and if you haven't got this yet you have some work to do before you get to step three....

Step three

Even if you have the necessary licence and the experience mentioned in step two, you should take some specific skysurfing training. Skysurfing novices should get coaching in freeflying safety and techniques and should also be coached in head-down and sit-flying. To put it bluntly you need to know exactly what you are doing when you are performing crazy surf tricks while careering towards earth at 100mph.

Step four

This is kind of covered in step two and three but I had to put one easy step in after the last two! If you haven't skydived for a while make sure your skydiving skills are up to scratch, you need to make sure you can still do all those basics, moving up, down, left , right, rotating, take part in formations and stay separate from other fliers when you want too.

Step five

Don't forget this one or else you may look a bit silly when you are going jump out the plane with all your skyboarding buddies... you need to get a board. They are a bit like snowboards, between 35 and 60 inches long. You'll also need the bindings a quick release system and a recovery chute for it. The rest of the equipment you will already have being a top notch sky diver so I won't remind you of that.

Step six

Put the kit on, jump out of a plane, pull off some dirty moves then pull your parachute cord. Job done.

Wakeboard Rope Information - No, Your Water Ski Rope Won't Do!

The Basics:

Wakeboard Binding

The right wakeboard rope can really enhance your wakeboarding experience. In order to do stunts, you will need a rope that has no give or stretch to it. This means, you won't be able to use your old waterski rope. When you are buying a wakeboarding rope, you want to keep these factors in mind:

Wakeboard Binding

Rope Material, You Get What You Pay For!

You will find that wakeboard ropes are available in two materials, Polyethylene and Spectra.

Polyethylene / Low Stretch: With a normal load, this type of rope will stretch about one percent. Spectra / No Stretch: This kind of rope is incredibly strong. With a normal load, it will stretch less than half of a percent. Most professional wakeboarders use Spectra ropes. A rope that does not change in quality is a definite plus when you are performing.

The Length Yo!

The standard wakeboard rope is about 60 to 70 feet in length. Most beginners prefer a shorter rope so that they are nearer to the boat and their wakes are not as wide. The best ropes are adjustable, via loops, and can be changed per the rider's abilities.

Gotta Have The Handles.

Handles are constantly changing to fit the needs of wakeboarders. The newest handles have ergonomic grips, making them much more comfortable. Most handles are between 13-15 inches in width, this is 2-3 inches wider than water ski handles. Tricks such as spins and wraps will be easier with a wider handle. The coolest tricks require you to pass the handle behind your back. And won't that be so much easier with a larger handle! There are ropes available with an additional grip closer to rider.

Four Unique Water Sports to Enjoy

If you live in Singapore or will be visiting, consider heading to Punggol Marina to take an exhilarating dip in the water. You can always enjoy sunbathing and swimming, but there are some more exciting adventures to be found in this area of Singapore. Namely, there are four different water sports that are making a big splash with locals and visitors alike.

Wakeboard Binding

Water Skiing

Wakeboard Binding

Despite the experience you may have skiing down the snowy slopes of a mountain, you will be challenged to get vertical and stay vertical on skis trailing behind a boat. As a beginner, you will start out with a lot of wipeouts and gaining your balance may be difficult. If you keep at it, you will eventually find your feet and balance will become easier.

Visitors may just spend a couple hours in the water laughing at one another, but locals have really mastered the art of water skiing. They can be seen trailing behind boats in a variety of poses and while jumping from the surface of the water. This is what can be achieved with a lot of practice on skis.

Wakeboarding

This is similar to water skiing, but it is performed on a board rather than skis. Think of it as snowboarding, but on water rather than the side of a mountain. Some find this a bit easier than water skiing, so it is something to try out if you have trouble getting upright and staying there on skis. Just like water skiing, you are attached to a motorboat and pulled over the waves for this sport.

While many consider this a newer water sport, it has actually been around for quite awhile. It is something that can be enjoyed by locals as well as visitors, since motorboats can be chartered for a couple hours at a time.

Wake Surfing

This is very similar to wakeboarding, but you are not attached to the motorboat while surfing. You are on a board much like a snowboard and try to get upright in the wake created by the boat racing ahead. This is more challenging, because you have to get up and catch the wave on your own just as you would while surfing. If you have some surfing experience, then this may be the most exciting option for you. It is a bit different, but the wake from the boat is very similar to the waves you would catch out in the ocean.

Wake Skating

This is yet another variation of the other water sports listed above. Get out behind the boat and try to skate along the wake created by the boat. The board has no bindings, so it feels kind of like skateboarding, except you are not on flat ground.

One other option is kneel boarding, which is like wakeboarding but down on your knees. This is an alternative for those who are very nervous about trying to ski, skate or board behind a boat in upright position. Some children and teenagers prefer to do kneel boarding as well. This is a great way to break the nerves and build up some confidence, so you can try to go vertical later in the day.

If you live in Singapore, head out to Punggol Marina and check out the action in the water today. If you will be visiting Singapore, consider booking your time on the water ahead so the boards and skis are waiting for you.
