Before anything make sure you have a good life-jacket. Crashes during water skiing are inevitable for beginners.
1) If the driver isn't familiar with pulling skiers, tell him that he will need to gas it to get you up and out of the water, and then slow down gradually once you are up and going. If he goes too slow at the beginning, it won't be possible for you to get up and out of the water. He won't want to continue going too fast once you are up, so he needs to very gradually get back down to a safe speed.

2) Get in the water, slip on your ski's, and tighten them as much as you can. You'll normally lose one or both of them when you crash, even if they're tight, but you don't want one to slip off as you're skiing along the water.
3) Have the driver tighten all of the slack out of the rope. The less slack there is, the easier it will be for you to get up. Once you grab hold of the rope he can give the boat just a tiny bit of gas and then stop it again, and it will slowly pull you along a ways and get the slack out.
4) Once the slack is out of the rope, bend your legs at the knee, crossing the top of your ski's a tad to help you keep them together. This is key to helping you get up.
5) Put the rope in between the ski's, and hold it right in front of your chest. You should be almost in a little ball, resting your butt on the end of your ski's in the water if you can.
6) Once you are in the water, with your knees bent, ski's together, and rope between them and held in front of your chest, relax! Relax, relax, relax. I cannot stress this enough, it plays a big part in getting up for your first time.
7) Let the boat and rope pull you up. Don't try to stand up right away, because you will go right back down. This is the number one mistake of most beginners, and the hardest thing to explain. Do not stand up until you feel it is the right time. Definitely don't stand up right away, the boat will pull you just a little ways before it's time to stand. Do not try to force it.
8) Stand up slowly and gradually! Don't fight the pull of the rope and the water, go with it.
9) Try and try again. It took me half of a summer before I learned the trick to standing up slowly and not trying to force it. When you get it once, each time after will come easier until it's effortless to get up.
10) Once you are up, use the rope to help you stay up. You can pull it up above your head or down low to help balance out the slack. This will help you stay up as the driver is slowing down.
Water skiing is a blast once you figure it out! Just stay patient and don't give up. It might take you 5, 10, 20, or 200 hundred tries before you get it, but you will eventually. It's worth the effort. It's such an exhilarating feeling to be gliding across the water with the wind whipping past you.
