If you've been doing any research at all in regards to today's effectiveness of skin care products, the odds are that you've come across the word "paraben" more than a few times. While there has been no direct link made between paraben and a number of health issues (including breast cancer), the scientific community has long worried that this toxic preservative could be causing some real harm in people who use it on a regular basis. Despite what the cosmetic industry may tout, the dangers of paraben are indeed real. Used in the vast majority of skin care products because of their ability to preserve the natural ingredients within the product's recipe, as well as their inexpensive cost, parabens have been used throughout the world since the 1920's to help prevent the growth of bacteria in a wide range of consumer products. Although many people have questioned their safety on and off for decades, it wasn't until researchers discovered a few years ago that more than 90% of breast cancer tumors they studied contained traces of paraben -- which turned out to be the only commonality between the patients, it really didn't raise much concern. That has since changed, even forcing many cosmetic companies to stop using the chemical in their product lines.
Why Are Parabens Bad?
One of the things that make parabens so bad for humans is their ability to bind to the bodies' estrogen receptors, causing an estrogen-like response within the bodies tissues. Unfortunately parabens seem to be the most dangerous when applied to or injected into the skin.
But, if the dangers of paraben are so high and paraben is indeed that bad for you, why is it still being used in so many products? There are several reasons:
1. there is no conclusive evidence that it causes cancer
2. it is effective and cheap to use
3. the cosmetic and skin-care industry is the least regulated industries in the United States
Whether you believe parabens are bad or not, the fact remains that more research into their dangers is needed to ensure that people are not being needlessly put at risk for cancer or other serious health problems by using products containing this preservative chemical. In the meantime it is up to each individual consumer to look for all-natural products that remain paraben free in order to avoid any toxic exposure.
